PROGRAM INTRODUCTION:
Understanding
and managing the impact of the oil & gas and petrochemical industries on
the local environment and communities is a basic requirement of the
business, or part of the ‘license to operate’. This course is uniquely
designed for the industry needs around the ‘Fundamental Application’
level of the Petro Skills environmental competency map. It aims to equip
participants with a working knowledge of environmental risk management
and how to apply this in their respective roles. A rich variety of
exercises, readings, and case studies are used to practice application
of the learning in realistic situations. The focus will be on practical
methods and approaches for conducting community impact assessments and
developing skills in risk communication. Case studies, examples, and
exercises will be provided to ensure practical relevance to
participants’ experience.
WHO
SHOULD ATTEND?
All staff who
have the responsibility for implementing, executing or supporting
environmental techniques and management including; HSE Professionals,
Engineers, Operations, Supervisors and Project managers. This is a core
course for any persons involved with developing and/or implementing
Environmental Impact Studies, either directly or though management of
specialist companies, and/or has direct contact with the local
communities on Environmental issues.
PROGRAM OBJECTIVES:

Understand context and rationale for environmental
impact studies and the need to work with community and stakeholders

Understand what Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR)
is and know about the worldwide initiatives to establish standards
of good organizational performance that provide a credible platform
for effective community outreach programs

Understand
what CSR principles and CSR core issues are
-
Understand
what comprises an environmental impact assessment, including
techniques for assessing biological, cultural and hazardous
materials effects on exploration, expansion and new construction of
facilities.

Understand
what comprises a community impact assessment, including techniques
for acquiring and analyzing information about potential effects of
proposed development, with emphasis on quality of life
-
Understand
what biodiversity issues need to be addressed for impact studies and
how they tie into community relations
-
Be
able to address critical early steps regarding community concerns
and the development of an accurate and credible assessment of
potential short and long term impacts on natural and human
resources, especially those affecting the quality of life in
affected communities.

Understand
alternative assessment methodological approaches, including social
impact assessment (social structure) models vs. environmental
assessment models, and the advantages, disadvantages, and basic
assessment techniques of both

risk communication basics, including the principles and techniques
for building positive relationships with affected communities
through communication about their concerns and aspirations

Understand
what is needed for effective face to face communication skills –
making the connection and an overview of working with the media
